I first went to Pinterest to help pick the theme. I'm not creative enough to come up with ideas on my own but I'm pretty good at implementing other people's ideas! I saw lots of fun party ideas and since I can't get over how cute they are, and we're total geeks, we decided to do robots. I went to the party store and was woefully disappointed in their robot selection. So, I turned back to Pinterest to help me pull it all off!
One of the projects I'm most impressed with was the robot cut out.
Here's the original pin I found.

I thought the robot cut out would be a fun idea along the same line which is why I chose it as a project to do (gotta keep everything equal!).
I started hoarding cardboard boxes and put JR in charge of construction. He came up with a pretty sturdy solution by attaching a tall box to a box full of wooden blocks so the kids can step up into it.
It's just right for the babies, the toddlers can stand in the box and bend a little, and hopefully the big kids can stand back without stepping on the box and put their heads in.
Then he cut out cardboard pieces for the robot's head, body, arms, and legs.
I offered design direction along the way and painted it when he had all the pieces cut out. We covered the box with brown paper and used hot glue to glue the pieces to the big box.
Here's the birthday boy, Robo-Colin!
I think it came out really cute and was a great idea!
